Emergency Response Trailer

The N9GTC Amateur Radio Club (ARC), comprised of Gateway Technical College (GTC), CATI (Center for Advanced Technology & Innovation) campus students are in need of a site/locale for the club radio station. The current site is located in an open lab/lecture room. The ARC is proposing to build a portable unit that can be used as an emergency response unit to aid the local communities during a natural disaster that has disrupted other forms of communication and as an identifiable element of the club and GTC providing recognition to the general public of the school’s programs and civic activities as it relates to the community in which GTC resides.

The portable unit will additionally serve as a locale for the ARC until a suitable fixed location can be obtained inside of the CATI facilities where the Engineering Technology Wing of the school is located The remote unit will be powered by 12 volt batteries which will be charged by three (3) means: a battery charger plugged into a standard 120 volt receptacle, a gas generator, and by means of solar panels mounted to the roof of the trailer. This enables the unit to be operational regardless of the weather or where it is located.

Project Cost:

Trailer      $2,500.00
Generator $300.00
Wiring, Lights   $750.00
Antenna(s)   $300.00
Solar Panels   $1,000.00
Batteries $500.00
Misc. Building Materials    $500.00
Safety Items (fire extinguisher, etc.)   $200.00
Radio Gear $2,950.00
Total  $9,000.00

The proposed unit will be designed, and assembled by the N9GTC Amateur Radio Club and the Gateway Electronics Club. The clubs will also be asking assistance from other campus clubs in the building of items such as the tables needed to secure the radio(s), for battery containment, and other items as needed. The proposed project is planned to commence at the beginning of the Spring, 2010 semester and achieve basic operational capability by the close of the Spring, 2010 semester.

We are seeking donations to help the Amateur Radio Club achieve this goal. Any help towards this will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged.  All donations would go through our Gateway Foundation.  The Gateway Technical College Foundation, Inc. was established as a not-for-profit charitable organization in 1977. It is chartered with the State of Wisconsin as an entity separate from Gateway Technical College. It was organized for the purpose of supporting educational programs and opportunities at Gateway Technical College through private gifts and grants. The Foundation's tax exempt 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service assures donors that all gifts are tax deductible.

Thank you,
